fur ban

source
west hollywood in california recently passed a law banning the sale of new clothing containing animal fur. i wonder what this will lead to. (warning: slippery slope fallacy ahead!) if we ban fur in clothing, i'm sure eventually it will lead to banning fur in other stuff: furniture, decor, bedding, jewelry, shoes... the activists are arguing that we should ban fur because it's cruel to animals. so what about stuff using leather? or feathers? there are synthetic furs and leathers, but i don't think we have fake feathers yet. and while birds do lose the occasional feather that maybe reusable, but about down feathers that go into insulating cold weather gear? there is synthetic down (which is usually just fabric filler), but i don't know that they've come up with a better insulator in jackets and sleeping bags than down feathers. (tho i know barely anything about this kind of gear so i could definitely be wrong.)

and other than using animal products for "non-essential" stuff like fashion or decorating, what about eating meat? you can't argue that eating meat is less cruel to animals than using their fur or skin for stuff! i doubt a whole town will ban meat tho. that would be crazy!

I think it's also short-sighted because banning the sale of one item in one city will barely even register on the radar of global fur sales. They'll just go down the street to Beverly Hills and grab their fur there. Fur is generally expensive, so that's actually lost revenue for the city.

that's what "street" people were saying on the news: "i'm just going to shop somewhere else." weho isn't a super large town and i doubt this will have any effect on designers. still, as an idealist, i can appreciate what they're doing. gotta start somewhere, right? ...tho i'm pretty eh on the fur issue...
